Idaho 4-H License Plate

Beginning in January , 2015 the Idaho 4-H License Plate will be available for purchase! Many people worked very hard across the state to make this a reality. $22 of the purchase price of the license plate will go to fund existing programs and provide funding for new educational activities. We hope everyone shows their support of the 4-H program by purchasing these license plates.

Ada County Teens Meet and Bowl

"Come bowl with us and check out some great leadership opportunities!"   The Ada County Teen Ambassadors are hosting a bowling night to introduce our teen program with an information session followed by BOWLING!!     The Ada County Teen Ambassador group meets at the Ada County Extension Office and holds community service activities, fun and educational events, and acts as ambassadors for the Ada County 4-H Program.   The group is open for all 4-H members 13 and up. The 4-H year is just getting started! Check out these events: November 6: Ada County Leader's Meeting, 7 pm, Ada County Extension. The public is welcome to attend the leader's meeting. November 7-9: State Leader's Forum, Lewiston. This is a great chance to meet 4-H leaders all over the state and exchange ideas and learn new ways of leading projects. There are workshops and trips around the area. November 8: Deadline to register for the Ambassador Conference. Register on 4-H Online. November 9: Deadline to register for National 4-H Conference. Register on 4-H Online. November 11: District II Horse Council Meeting, 7 pm, Canyon County Extension. November 13: Ada County Endowment Board Meeting. Shooting Sports Trainings

We're always looking for new shooting sports volunteers. If you have an interest in helping youth learn about our shooting sports program which includes, safety, care for firearms, proper handling, and shooting there are trainings in this area this fall! To help with our shooting sports program 4-H volunteers must take the 4-H certified trainings in each discipline they would like to help with. Check out these trainings: Archery, November 22, Emmett. The cost of this training is $50 and the registration deadline is November 14 Rifle, January 10, Emmett. The cost of this training is $50 and the registration deadline is January 2. 4-H Ambassador Program

4-H members make the best spokespersons for the 4-H program. the purpose of the Ambassador program is to promote 4-H to youth, parents, and the community. 4-H members who are in 9th grade or above and have been in 4-H for two or more years are eligible for this program. 4-H members with an interest in promoting our program and learning to improve their public speaking skills are encouraged to apply for this program. The registration deadline is approaching fast! Saturday, November 1 is the deadline to register. The cost for the program is $95. How to Join Ada County 4-H

It's the end of September and the new 4-H year begins on October 1st! This is a great time to join a local 4-H club and participate in upcoming activities and here's how you do it: Attend our Open House on September 29 and learn more about our clubs, projects, and activities. You can also meet our staff and 4-H volunteer leaders.        2. Important Dates for WIF

The Western Idaho Fair is almost here! Here's a list of important dates to remember: Saturday, August 9: Horse Project interview evaluations at the Western Riding Club. Check with your 4-H leader for interview times. Monday, August 11: Robotics posters are due to the Extension Office. Tuesday, August 12: Interview evaluations for all projects, except Horse at the Expo Building from 9 am to 8 pm. Interviews are by appointment only, call 287-5900 to schedule. Wednesday, August 13: Final day of interview evaluations. 9 am to 1 pm. By appointment only. Thursday, August 14: Check in for livestock, check fairbook for details. Friday, August 15 - 19: 4-H Fair at the Western Idaho Fair. Be sure to check the fairbook for times, dates, and locations of events throughout the fair. Go to: http://idahofair.com/

4-H REC Night

Is your record book ready for fair? If not, come to our 4-H REC Night clinic. This clinic will have people available to answer your questions or use this time to complete your record book. Oral Presentations

4-H members can participate in the Ada County Oral Presentation contest held July 14, 15, and 16 at the Ada County Extension Office. This event is open to all 4-H members. Presentations can be given in following categories and blue ribbon winners can participate in the District II Oral Presentation contest held during the Western Idaho Fair. Demonstrations: A Demonstration is showing or demonstrating how to do something or make something. Illustrated Talk: An illustrated talk involves explaining something while using pictures, charts, or other visual aids. Speech: A speech uses only words and gestures to present a topic. No visual aids can be used except note cards. Dramatic Reading: A dramatic reading includes words and actions to present material to educate or entertain. Presenter may use their own material or previously published material. TV Commercial: This is a presentation to convince the audience to buy an idea or product. Illustrations or products can be used

Ada County Fashion Revue

Ada County Fashion Revue features 4-H members modeling their favorite outfit! This could be an outfit you purchased that shows off your style sense or that great outfit that you made or someone made for you. All 4-H members from Cloverbuds to Senior members are invited to show their style in this event. Blue ribbon winners qualify to participate in the District II Fashion Revue too. To sign up for this event submit your narration form on or before Wednesday, August 13 to the Expo Building. You can turn this form in during the Interview Evaluation before the fair. Canyon County 4-H is holding a practice for this event on Wednesday, July 9 from 2 to 5 pm. If you would like to attend this practice call 459-6003 to RSVP. The Ada County Fashion Revue will be Saturday, August 16 at the Western Town Stage. Even if you are unable to participate come on out and watch our 4-H'ers in action!

Monthly Calendar June

Summer is almost here and there is so much to do! Check it out: June 3: District II Horse Camp Orientation, Canyon County Extension, 7 pm. This is mandatory for everyone attending camp. June 3: Sheep Field Day, Owyhee County Fairgrounds, 1 pm. Learn about your breeding project including nutrition, record keeping, and more! The cost is $2. Call 896-4104 for more information. June 4: Swine Field Day, Gem County Fairgrounds, 1 pm. Centered on breeding swine. The cost is $2 per person. Call 365-6363 for more information. June 5: Ada County Leader's Meeting, Ada County Extension, 7 pm. Leaders need to attend two meetings a year and there are only two left before the fair! June 7: District II Horse Judging and Hippology. Must qualify at the county level to attend. June 9-13: Teen Conference, University of Idaho, Moscow. Archery Class

Would you like to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow? At this class not only will learn about shooting, proper form and safety, you will also complete a 4-H project to take it to the Western Idaho Fair. This class will be Tuesdays beginning June 3 to July 22 at Dead On Archery, 2006 E Franklin Rd, Meridian, 6:30 to 8:00 pm. The cost is $40. Participants must be 8 years by January 1, 2014. Send the  archery registration  in by Friday, May 30.

May Monthly 4-H Calendar

Check out these events for the month of May! May 6 - Deadline to turn COOL forms in for the Swine Project. Forms need to be turned in to the Ada County Extension Office by 5 pm. Include a picture of the pig with the ear tag, $4 per head. This is for any market swine showing at the Western Idaho Fair for 4-H or FFA. May 9 - Registration due for the District II Horse Camp. Update on Swine Weigh In

Due to the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) virus that has been diagnosed in Idaho and the risk factors involved in bringing pigs to a central location at this time, there will not be an official Western Idaho Fair 4-H/FFA initial swine weigh in for 2014. This decision was made with the guidance of the Idaho Department of Ag by representatives of the Western Idaho Fair, Ada County Extension, FFA, Swine Supervisors, and the Junior Livestock Sale Committee. In order to show and sell a pig at the 2014 Western Idaho Fair exhibitors must do the following:  Have ownership and care of your animal(s) by no later than May 6 .      Properly ear tag your animal(s). Numbered tag issued from the Ada County Extension Office should be in the pig’s left ear with the number on the outside of the ear. Several breeders in to area have agreed to help with this process when you pick up your animal; check with them first before you pick up ear tags at the office.      Submit a COOL form to

4-H Adventure Camp

4-H Adventure Camp is held in Donnelly, ID every summer. There are camps for grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. The camp is at Cascade Lake 4-H Camp which will soon be celebrating their 50th year! Kids get to enjoy swimming, fishing, canoeing, shooting sports, and other outdoor events. The kids stay in groups in cabins with their camp counselor. Bus transportation is available to and from camp. This year we're offering payment plans so everyone can enjoy camp! Some county extension offices have scholarships available so be sure to check with your local extension office also. Check out events and deadlines for the month of April! Tuesday, April 15: Horse Declaration forms are due to the Ada County Extension Office by 5 pm. 4-H Healthy Living - Preserving with Kids

If you're thinking about a gardening project this year consider the food preservation projects too! You can combine two projects while enjoying your produce year around. The 4-H Food Preservation project includes drying, freezing, canning, and pressure canning. These re-vamped project manuals are available through the University of Idaho . We're also offering an extensive 4 hour workshop on these projects on Thursday, May, 1 from 1 to 5 pm at the Ada County Extension Office. The cost is $10 which includes manuals and supplies. The workshop is taught by Extension Educators from across the state. Healthy 4-H Club Challenge

Join the Idaho 4-H Healthy Club Challenge! Learn about healthy habits, nutrition, and getting active! The goals of the challenge includes encouraging youth and leaders to learn about nutrition and health. To practice what they learn with their families and teach others healthy habits. The criteria to participate in the Healthy 4-H club Challenge are: During the year incorporate one nutrition idea/activity into at least 6 club meetings Elect a Health Office to conduct nutrition ideas/activities and record keeping 4-H members are encouraged to complete the at home activities Club record sheets and completed fair display turned in to the Ada County Extension Office Complete a service learning project related to health and nutrition The winning club will receive special recognition at a later date! 4-H Benefit and Dinner

Saturday, March 15 is the annual 4-H Benefit Dinner. All proceeds will benefit Ada County 4-H. Everyone is invited to attend and show their support for the 4-H program. There will be a tri-tip dinner, baked potato, and salad. Top off your meal with a desert raffle featured hand made and specialty deserts. Local businesses and individuals have donated luxury items, themed packages, dinners at some of the best restaurants in Boise, and more. Along with the raffle there will be a live and silent auction. Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm on Saturday, March 15 at Center at the Park, 1920 N Records Ave, Meridian. Tickets are $25 per person or $40 for a couple. Spring Break Day Camps

Are you looking for something to do during spring break? It's time for the 2014 Ada County 4-H Spring Break Day Camps. We're offering camps on a variety of subjects for different age groups. You can sign up for the camps online at Camp Registration. WeDo Robotics - March 24,  Ages 6-9, Cost: $13 Learn how to make and program a simple robot and create a story with your robot. NXT Robotics - March 25, Ages 9-14, Cost: $13 Build a program a Mindstorm robot River Scavenger Hunt, March 26, Ages 9-14, Cost: $13 Explore the Boise Watershed and go on a scavenger hunt. Filled with outdoor adventure! Decorate Your Duds, March 27, Ages 7-14, Cost: $13 Add new life to your clothes, personalize them, and decorate them. Eco-Bot Challenge, March 28, Ages 9-14, Cost: $13 Join an engineering team and program a robot to meet the challenge.

Shooting Sports Open House

Everyone is invited to come see what the Shooting Sports Program is all about! Friday, March 28 4 to 8 pm Cost $5 Dead On Archery, 2600 E Franklin Rd #100, Meridian Try your hand at archery or rifle while you're there! Adults are invited to learn about opportunities to volunteer with this program. You can also sign up for a shooting competition on Saturday, March 29th and Sunday, March 30th. Western Idaho Poultry Clinic

Birds of a Feather 4-H Club is once again hosting the poultry clinic on Saturday, April 19 at Expo Idaho Small Animal Barn at 9 am. Everyone is invited to attend this free event. There will be information on preparing your birds for the fair and showmanship along with games and raffles. Refreshments will also be available. And of course, your bird is welcome to attend! Idaho Horsemanship Award

The Idaho Horsemanship Award is a test of knowledge and skills in horsemanship. The award honors the most talented youth riders in Idaho! The award is open to all youth 14 and up (as of January 1, 2014) and not more than 19 years old during the calendar year. Applicants must also be enrolled in an organized horse program. The applicant must manage or own the horse used to compete a minimum of 120 days before the performance test. The application is due on Friday, February 7 to the Ada County Extension Office. The written test will be scheduled between the 24th and 28th of February. The performance test will be on September 14. For more information call Dana at 287-5900. Small Animal Clinic

We're offering a health and grooming clinic for small animals at the Ada County Extension Office on Saturday, February 8. Everyone is welcome to come and  learn more about the health of your project animal. Also, bring your grooming equipment along with your animal and learn new techniques. The clinic will be broken down into one hour sessions beginning at 9 am. The clinics are as follows: Cavy - 9 am Rabbit - 10 am Pocket Pet & Cat - 11 am Noon - lunch break on your own Pygmy goat - 1 pm Poultry - 2 pm Dog - 3 pm Be sure to bring your grooming equipment and your project animals (except pygmy goat) Animals should be in crates and carpet square (as applicable) Do not bring shavings or hay. Super Saturday!

It's time for the annual Super Saturday training for 4-H leaders and teens. Join us on Saturday, January 25 at the Meridian High School Technical Center at 8:30 am. We're offering a series of workshops on a variety of topics. There will be three sessions with four workshops offered each session. The cost is $5 per person or $10 for a family.
